The winner of the first round of the presidential elections in Southern Cyprus was former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides.
Second place went to Andreas Mavroyannis, an independent candidate supported by AKEL.
The second round of elections will take place next Sunday between Christodoulidis and Mavroyiannis.
Nikos Christodoulidis managed to get 32 percent of the vote, and Mavroyiannis – 29.6 percent.
Averof Neophytou, the candidate backed by DISI President and current Greek Cypriot Administration President Nikos Anastasiades, received 26.1 percent of the vote.
The participation rate in the elections was 72 percent, while the non-voting rate was 28 percent.
98.3 percent of the votes were validated.
According to the Turkish news agency Cyprus TAK, during the electoral process, Christodoulides and the parties supporting him took an “objective”, “supporting the division of Cyprus” position on Cyprus with the idea of ”they are there, we are here”; Neophytou and Mavroyiannis made discourses in the direction of “reunification”.
Christodoulidis, one of the independent candidates in the presidential elections, was appointed to the diplomatic post of Greek Cypriot Administration President Nikos Anastasiades on 1 September 2013. From April 14, 2014, in parallel with this duty, he served as press secretary in the government of Nikos Anastasiades, who came to power in 2013.
Christodoulidis, who held this position until 28 February 2018, continued in this position until 9 January 2022, when he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs on 1 March 2018.
In the presidential elections, Christodoulides is supported by DIKO, EDEK, the Solidarity Movement and DIPA.
Andreas Mavroyannis, an independent candidate supported by the AKEL party in Southern Cyprus, is known as a seasoned diplomat. Mavroyiannis, nominated by AKEL in June 2022 for the presidency, has been the negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side in the negotiations on the Cyprus problem for many years.
Mavroyannis, who was a member of the Greek Cypriot negotiating team during the intercommunal negotiations to resolve the Cyprus problem between 2002 and 2008, took over as Deputy Minister for European Presidential Affairs in the government of Dimitris Christofias on 17 October 2011.
Mavroyiannis, who took over the post of the General Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from March 1, 2013 and held this position until August 31, 2013, was appointed as the negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side in the negotiations on the Cyprus issue in September 20131, 2013.
Mavroyiannis resigned from this post on 15 April 2022.
