The death toll from the cholera epidemic in Mozambique was reported to have risen to 37.
Mozambican Health Minister Armindo Thiago announced that the death toll from the epidemic has risen to 37 since the beginning of the year.
Noting that more than 5,000 cases have been identified so far, Thiago announced that they have provided a vaccine to fight the cholera epidemic and that they will start a vaccination campaign this week.
Thiago noted that they aim to vaccinate 700,000 people across the country.
The incidence of cholera, which has been declining for years thanks to measures taken by global health institutions and governments, has started to rise again due to factors such as climate change, poverty and conflict.
According to the World Health Organization, while the number of countries with cholera cases in the world from 2017 to 2021 was below 20, cholera epidemics were observed in 26 countries in 2022 alone.
