Ecuador has introduced a new digital nomad visa that promises remote workers low cost of living and authentic experiences.

Ecuador has just announced a new visa that makes it possible for people who work remotely to spend up to two years exploring and working in the country.
The ‘Rentista for Remote Work visa’ was officially unveiled at World Travel Market in London. It’s designed to attract remote workers from around the world who want to spend time exploring Ecuador’s stunning natural attractions.
“The pandemic allowed us to rethink tourism and opportunities,” said Ecuadorian Tourism Minister Niels Olsen during his presentation at World Travel Market. “We weren’t the first country to invent [the digital nomad visa], but we have really embraced it.”
The new visa is part of a package of incentives aimed at attracting foreign investors and entrepreneurs who are interested in setting up businesses in Ecuador.
It allows applicants to stay in the country as long as they meet certain requirements: they must have a passport that has at least six months validity;
they must have no criminal record;
they must show proof of an income of at least €1,266 per month (three times Ecuador’s “basic salary”);
and they must demonstrate that their source of income is from outside Ecuador— not from investments or other sources
Applicants must also prove that they have health insurance that’s valid in Ecuador and be willing to pay a processing fee of €460.
The visa is open to candidates from most countries. However, purposes are no longer approved from Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Cameroon, North Korea, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Philippines, Gambia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Iran, Kenya, Libya, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Syria, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Yemen.
